• Inform my consultant about challenging cases and contribute constructively to the evaluation and development of treatment plan for such cases.
• Conducts ward rounds and ensure all plans are duly carried out
• Assesses fitness for discharge, fills discharge summary and gives appropriate discharge advise.
• Maintains an excellent spirit of teamwork with other health care providers
• RoyalCare Hospital is a private hospital with about 40 bed spaces in total. The hospital specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology, General surgery, Pediatrics and General medicine. I served here for 6months.
• In charge of resuscitating and stabilizing patients with emergency conditions
• Consult outpatients and ensured proper follow up
• Ensured inpatients are properly monitored and their management plans are optimally carried out
• Counsel all patients on lifestyle modifications that can improve their overall health
• Performed basic obstetric ultrasound scans
• Interacted with patient relatives and carries them along in the management plan, while maintaining patient’s confidentiality
• Engaged the nursing, support and administrative staff on strategies that would improve overall patient care.
• Referred patients that need specialist care promptly and appropriately
• Engaged in routine health education programme for mothers that bring their children for childhood immunization.
• Worked as a team with other healthcare workers.
University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital is one of the largest tertiary health centers in Nigeria which serves Kwara state and it is the largest referral center in North Central Nigeria. It has a bed capacity of about 700.
OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY (3 MONTHS)
• I was the first on call at the gynaecological emergency unit, triaging, resuscitating and stabilizing patients with emergency conditions like Placenta previae, eclampsia, ectopic pregnancy.
• I carried out daily ward rounds on all the in-patients, noting their vital signs and documenting the progress in management.
• Consulted at the outpatient antenatal clinics.
• Performed procedures like manual vacuum evacuation, episiorrhaphies (under supervision).
• Monitored patients in labour and supervised the deliveries with my seniors.
• Assisted my seniors in surgical procedures like Caesarean sections, myomectomy, exploratory laparotomy, etc.
• Actively participated in daily case reviews, weekly scientific meetings and morbidity and mortality reviews.
SURGERY (3 MONTHS)
• Took calls in the Accident and Emergency department where I triage and resuscitate patients presenting with surgical emergencies like appendicitis, fractures, road traffic accident victims, etc.
• Carried out a daily morning review on all in-patients and report findings to my seniors.
• Ensured patients’ charts for fluids, vital signs, medications are up to date.
• Prepared patients for surgery by ensuring consent form is signed (after the procedure has been well explained by my Consultant), ensured all laboratory investigations are done and optimal.
• Performed minor procedures like intravenous cannulations, passage of Nasogastric tube and urethral catheter, wound suturing,etc.
• Assisted with procedures like chest tube insertion, extensive burns dressing, suprapubic cystostomy, escharotomy , appendectomy, etc.
• Attended weekly grand rounds which is a review of all morbidities and mortalities recorded in every surgical department.
• Wrote consults to other specialties inviting them for co-management
• Reviews patients that present to the outpatient clinics for follow up visits.
• Took history and examined patients in clinics and then review my findings with my seniors to ensure optimal patient management.
• Worked as a team with the surgical nurses and other healthcare workers.
INTERNAL MEDICINE (3 MONTHS)
• Took calls at the medical emergency department where I triage and resuscitate patients with medical emergencies like Diabetic ketoacidosis, hypoglycemic coma, gastroenteritis, acute stroke, etc.
• Conducted a daily intern ward round on all inpatients and ensure all relevant charts are updated.
• Consult in the outpatient clinics and presented to my seniors.
• Wrote consults to other specialties to invite for co-management of patients as directed by my consultant
PAEDIATRICS (3 MONTHS)
• Rotated through the pediatric emergency department where I resuscitated children with emergencies like gastroenteritis, sickle-cell crises, severe malaria, etc.
• Ensured all relevant charts (vitals, fluids, feeds) are up to date.
• Monitored neonates closely in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
• Carried out procedures like umbilical vein cannulation, intravenous cannulation, Exchange Blood Transfusion.
• Joined the neonatal resuscitation team when invited to co-manage with the obstetricians.
I delivered a baby immediately following internship on the 20th February, 2019, hence I was on maternity break.
