Summary

My reason for applying for this job emanates from my interest and desire to work in an advanced medical institution that provides opportunities for me to gain a wide range of experience, expand my knowledge and clinical skills through training and work alongside outstanding individuals to maximize my skills while I apply my knowledge in patient care. Also, being compassionate, being able to work in a team, treating each and every one with respect and dignity and commitment in delivery a safe and quality care to my patients stands as a guide to my practice each day.


Having had about 5 years of clinical experience across various specialties like emergency and general medicine, surgery, psychiatry paediatrics, geriatric, obstetrics and gynaecology, I appreciate the relevance of having the knowledge of my responsibilities and that of other colleagues, prompt intervention in Medical Practice, drawing from various knowledge and experiences to save and improve the quality of life, maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff, prevent complications and prolong life expectancy.

In the course of my jobs, both past and present, I have done night shifts, during which period I have had to liaise with staff of other disciplines in managing some issues and I did this easily because of the good relationship I have built with them, this makes the work easier and more interesting, I have also succeeded in having a cordial relationship with the administrative staff, knowing that working with them remains in the best interest of the patients, myself and my organization.


Based on my exposure in my current job, I have developed a deep sense of commitment to patient care which has helped me learn to individualize patient treatment, clerk patients, deliver prompt emergency care, explore their concerns and address them, evaluate and formulate a prioritized differential diagnosis, initiate appropriate management plan, and adjust them depending on the outcomes of treatment. I also consult with my seniors in areas of difficulty as I am well aware of my own limitations and this has helped me develop a deep sense of duty and responsibility which has motivated me to achieve an excellent standard of patient care which is consistent with patient management guidelines.

My greatest strength as a doctor which I have developed through my years of practice are my listening abilities, attention to details, good bedside manners, ability to explore patients feelings, ideas, fears and expectations for which I have received several commendations from patients and colleagues alike. I am able to engage patients and their relatives in calm and detailed conversations, explaining their care in steps and in a language they understand in order for them to make informed choices concerning their care. I am able to prioritize tasks, work efficiently under pressure and meet up with deadlines which has helped me in my current and previous jobs and in the management of emergency cases. My current job has given me the opportunity to learn how to prioritize patient welfare, think on my feet, ensure proper communication and follow up of patients, work as a team across specialties. I also uphold the principle of patient confidentiality at all times.

My interest and desire for self-development has seen me take courses and certifications like ALS and BLS, Blood Borne Pathogen, Health safety Environment (HSE 1& 2) Triaging of critically ill patient, Welcome to UK practice and other intending trainings coming up within my place of work. I also look forward to partaking in more trainings in your facility. I also take part in teaching and presentations during departmental seminars and grand rounds and desire to do other trainings including a specialty training.

With regards to my interpersonal skills, I have gathered experience from the time of my internship until now. I am able to relate smoothly with my colleagues and patients, and able to communicate appropriately with my seniors to aid prompt decision making and optimal patient care. I believe I am proficient in both written and spoken English Language. My medical education was in English and I also took the IELTS academic test and have an overall band of 7.5, with my minimum score being 7

Over-all, I possess the requisite skills, knowledge and experience to fulfill the responsibilities required in this role. I also possess the right mentality to work in the rich environment of the NHS and adapt quickly. I have a passion for patient care, self and service development, health advocacy and teaching and this has underscored my commitment to working as a doctor.

My overarching aim is to achieve skills, knowledge and competencies at par and even beyond those required to be recognized as an excellent doctor by my patients, colleagues and the NHS and to engage in new developments in Information Technology and I believe that working with you NHS Trust will afford me this opportunity.

I am a medical officer in Family Medicine Department of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, which is a tertiary hospital/health care delivery centre, a training centre and offers arange of medical care ,surgical care, adult and paediatric medicine ,obstetrics & gynaecological care, pyschiatry, geriatric care, research and a lot more procedures with palliative care to patients in Kwara State and its environs.


The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital serves more than 1000 population and a 616 bed spaces with more than 16 theatres.
The Family Medicine Department covers the General Outpatient Clinic, Medical emergency and the surgical emergency.
My core duties/responsibilities:
Provision/Delivery of emergency care to patients who present with acute illness.
Administration of appropriate medical interventions and treatment to all patients, preparation of medications and monitoring patients response to medication given.
Patient triaging and resuscitation using ABCDE approach, assessment, stabilization, accurate diagnosis and care for patients that come with various medical problems like Cerebrovascular accidents, cardiovascular emergencies ,diabetic emergencies, decompensated liver disease, sickle cell crisis, gastroenteritis amongst others.
Carrying out procedures like venepuncture, oral sunctioning, naso-gastric tube insertion, urethral catherization, abdominal tap ,peripheral intravenous cannulation, suturing of minor lacerations and injury , performing ECG on required patients, assisting in chest tube insertions and others.
Working in -line with hospital"s care protocol and maintain clinical records in line with hospital standard and regulations, approval of patients for discharge after review with seniors or for further procedures with specialists.
In the the outpatient wing,I attend to patients presenting with various medical problems ranging from medical and surgical problems to gynaecological, psychiatry and paediatric medical conditions.
I request investigations for patients, followup on their results and their clinical improvement. I prescribe medications ,interpret investigation results and refer or consult with appropriate specialties on the appropriate next line of action.I also contact patients who default in important followup appointments.
I work closely with my colleagues, seniors and other health workers with effective communciation and ensuring smooth running of each day activities. I attend departmental clinical and academic meetings, morbidity and mortality review where patients care is extensively discussed and recent guidelines in patient management is given /outlined which helps to improve the quality of care given to patients.
I liase with the hospital pharmacists to ensure safe prescribing is maintained at all times .I also ensure to adequately report adverse effects of medications.
I assist in day case procedures like breast lump exicision, cyst removal, lipoma excision, ear syringing, removal of in-growing toe nails, wound dressing and suturing.
I also present allocated topics during the department grand rounds and case presentations .I participate in audits and informal academic discussions which helps in widening my medical knowledge.

The Nigeria Police Medical center in Bompai, Kano state runs a 24 hour outpatient clinic, offers emergency medical ,surgical, paediatrics and gynaecological cases as well pharmacy and laboratory services.
I worked as a medical officer with other medical team members which included Consultants ,senior medical officer,nurses amd other health team staff.
The day activities usually starts with brief continuous medical education, then followed by ward rounds with senior colleagues.
I often respond to medical, surgical, paediatrics and gynaecological emergencies with the help of my members of medical team. Some of the cases are hypertensive urgency and emergencies, cerebrovascular emergencies, acute exacerbation of asthma, acute exacerbation of peptic ulcer disease, acute cases of trauma, Diabetic emergencies severe cases of malaria in children, febrile convulsions ,post partum haemorrhage and a list of others.
I have consultations with patient on outpatient basis and monitor Inpatients in the ward ensuring requested investigations are duly carried out and results documented.
I am responsible for prompt invite of different specialist depending on the case in view after proper de-briefing with my seniors and possible referral to tertiary hospital when the need arise.
I carried out procedures like peripheral intravenous cannulation, urethral catherizations, venepuncture, nebulizations, incision and
drainage of abscess, passage of Nasogastric tubes, suturing in minor injuries and lacerations, stablization of fratcure ,performing ECG on patients, episorraphy and a list of others.
I also took history and examined patients undertaking major surgery of which I assisted and was involved in their care till discharge including followup and full recovery.
I participated in presenting allocated topics during morning medical meetings of which current guidelines was given/outlined.
I request and interpret relevant investigations including blood test.
I assisted in compliation and analysis for data for medical audit purposes.
I liased with other members of the medical team, fostering proper and effective communication thereby ensuring smooth operations of the day.
I also engaged in teaching sessions with other health workers, giving of health talks and checking of vitals of the prison inmates and staffs of the command in kano once every month.

I rotated through General surgery, Accident and Emergency/trauma Unit, Plastic Surgery,Urology, Orthopaedic Unit.
I was the first on call and attended to patient coming into the unit under supervision of my Consultant.
I took history,examined and involved in the management of patients.
Pre and Post operative management of Surgical patients :
It was my duty as Intern to work up patients for surgery and to ensure they are fit and fully prepared for surgery.
I also observed in cases like mastectomy, appendectomy, thyroidectomy, herniorrhaphy, Suprapubic catherization, prostate biopsies, bowel resection with end to end anastomosis, chest tube insertion.
I assisted in minor and major surgical procedures.
I performed peripheral intravenous cannulation, venepuncture, urethral catherization, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, suturing of minor lacerations, monitoring post op patients.
I also participated in departmental grand rounds and presented allocated topics.

I was posted to Endocrinology Unit and Medical emergency (Acute Medicine).
I was the first on call and as part of the medical team,my core duty was day to day management of patients(in-patients) and review with
follow-up of outpatient while passing through Acute medicine(Medical emergency unit), I was the first on call and responsible for triaging and prioritizing patients
to be seen. Also I was involved in the management of cerebrovascular accidents, cardiovascular emergencies, Diabetic emergencies, seizures disorders, acute exacerbations of Asthma,Upper GI bleeding and a list of others.
I presented allocated topics in the unit meetings and also taught final year medical student.

PAEDIATRICS OCTOBER 2018 -DECEMBER 2018
I rotated through the Children Emergency unit, Neonatal Intensive Care unit(NICU), Heamato-oncology unit and Paediatric nephrology unit.
I was involved in the management and resuscitation of paediatrics emergency conditions.
Management of neonates and premature babies in the Neonatalogy unit.

I was part of a team and participated in all team calls. I did an average of about 25 calls through out my rotation.
I rotated through the Ante-natal and Gynaecological clinics, Labour & delivery ward, IVF Center, Obstetrics & Gynaecology emergency unit.
I was actively involved in management of both in and out patients.
My roles were working with my senior colleagues in stabilization and resuscitation of gynaecology emergencies like ectopic pregnancies, antepartum heamorrhage, post partum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia , miscarriage and a list of others.
I assisted in cases like emergency caeserean section,myomectomy.I also observed and assisted in over 100 deliveries.
I performed episorraphy, manual evacuation of retained products of conception, monitored and observed labour till delivery of placenta.
