Climate Change and Sustainability Experience
Throughout my career, I have been actively engaged in initiatives that contribute to climate change resilience, sustainability, and green economic practices. Leveraging my extensive experience in policy development, trade, and organizational leadership, I have worked to integrate environmentally sustainable strategies across various industries.
• Sustainable Trade Practices: As Director General of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I have championed policies that encourage the adoption of green technologies and sustainable practices among MSMEs, ensuring alignment with global climate resilience goals, particularly in the context of Pan-African trade agreements such as the AfCFTA.
• I-GO Assistant Training Workshop: Recently, I organized and served as a panelist and speaker at the I-GO Assistant training workshop, co-organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Green Industry Platform, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop focused on promoting green industry practices and equipping businesses with tools to improve resource efficiency and sustainability in their operations.
• Collaboration with United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction: As the Director General of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I facilitated the signing of an agreement to collaborate with the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to support the private sector in Nigeria. This initiative focuses on enhancing disaster resilience within industries, ensuring that businesses are better prepared to respond to and recover from natural disasters. I currently serve as an adviser to the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce in this collaboration.
• Waste to Wealth Roundtable: I oversaw the organization of the first Chambers of Commerce Waste to Wealth Roundtable, which brought together high-level national and international agencies to discuss innovative strategies for converting waste into valuable resources, promoting sustainable economic practices, and supporting environmental goals.
• Gender, Disability, and Climate Resilience: My leadership in gender and disability inclusion at the Chamber has emphasized the importance of including women and youth in climate action. I have overseen programs that focus on building climate resilience for vulnerable populations, recognizing their critical role in sustainable development.
• Policy Advocacy for Climate-Smart Agriculture: In my early career as an Agricultural Economist and through my involvement with various government committees, I contributed to policies promoting climate-smart agricultural practices aimed at enhancing food security while mitigating the impact of climate change on rural communities.
These efforts have been instrumental in fostering a culture of sustainability, aligning economic growth with environmental stewardship, and ensuring that development projects under my leadership adhere to principles of environmental sustainability.
