During my house job training at the University of Osun Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, I had the opportunity to rotate through various specialities, gaining a comprehensive skill set and in-depth knowledge across multiple disciplines, which I believe make me a strong candidate for a position as a doctor. My rotation in obstetrics and gynaecology involved the active management of labour, repairing perineal lacerations, medical evacuation of incomplete miscarriages, monitoring of labor and delivery and assisting in cesarean sections. I worked in the gynaecology emergency unit, handling obstetric and gynaecological emergencies such as antepartum haemorrhage, ectopic pregnancies, and preeclampsia/eclampsia. Additionally, I participated in antenatal and booking clinics and made detailed presentations on the active management of the third stage of labour, the instrumental delivery of babies and contraceptives. In paediatrics, I gained critical experience in managing neonatal and pediatric emergencies. I spent five weeks in the children's emergency unit and four weeks in the neonatal emergency unit, managing cases such as perinatal asphyxia, neonatal sepsis, neonatal jaundice, febrile convulsions, meningitis, sickle cell crises, and severe malaria. I became proficient in exchange blood transfusions, neonatal venipuncture, and intravenous cannulation. I presented cases during consultant ward rounds, participated in decision-making, and delivered presentations on managing hypoglycemia and vaso-occlusive crises. In internal medicine, I rotated through Nephrology and Cardiology, where I served as the first on-call during medical takes and on-call shifts. I was responsible for triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, and transferring patients to the appropriate units. I managed complex cases including dialysis, hyperglycemic emergencies, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis and acute coronary syndromes. My time in Cardiology honed my skills in chest X-ray interpretation, ECG and the management of pulmonary embolism. In Nephrology, I gained hands-on experience with the management of Acute Kidney Injury cases, Chronic Kidney Diseases, and Pyelonephritis. I also learned how to perform basic investigations like urinalysis, and random blood sugar tests. I also regularly presented in-patients to consultants during ward rounds, ensuring thorough execution of treatment plans, and delivered departmental presentations on managing hypoglycemia and acute kidney injury. In surgery, I rotated through orthopaedics, urology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS), general surgery, and plastic surgery. I participated in ward covers, and on-call shifts, and assisted in theatre sessions, acquiring basic suturing skills and principles of wound care. I once assisted in a skin grafting procedure and external fixation of a joint. My routine duties included venipuncture, intravenous cannulation, urethral catheterization, and nasogastric tube insertion. My diverse rotations and hands-on experience across multiple specialities have equipped me with a robust foundation in medical practice, enabling me to handle a wide range of clinical situations confidently and competently. I am committed to providing high-quality patient care and am eager to bring my skills and dedication to your hospital, contributing to the continued excellence of healthcare delivery
