MISS GUINEA -BISSAU UK EVENTS
  • Working as the Beauty Pageant Presenter and Marketing Manager
  • Created by family members and friends, open to Bissau Guinean women resident in the United Kingdom
  • A way of creating an opportunity of interaction between Bissau Guinean natives all over the United Kingdom once a year
  • This was also an initiative that aimed at promoting the Bissau Guinean culture, by making it known to the public, trough the pageant and by creating awareness trough publicity, namely leaflets, newspapers, tv and radio
  • The winner, besides receiving various prizes, it would become a goodwill ambassador for Miss guinea Bissau UK, charged with designing and implementing a charity program.

Community Interpreter/ Translator

  • Providing Interpretation and Translation services for various organizations, such as Courts, Town Halls, Job Centers, Hospitals, Medical Practices, Legal Practitioners, and social services, Mental Health Institutes, Immigration, the Home Office, Police, Youth Centers, Job Centers, and Schools
  • I had to adapt to different situations and learn from them, because each client was going through different issues
  • Most cases were of a very sensitive nature, therefore I had to comply with the Interpreters confidentiality code
  • Although I could not get involved directly, but as a form of helping clients and making sure the message was put across, I had to make good use of my listening skills, good memory and note-taking skills, good interpersonal skills, good speaking skills, empathy skills, to be very patient and sensitive due to the unique nature of some cases
  • It has been a remarkable and rewarding experience, where I have grown and learnt a great deal from.

Personal assistant

  • Giving support to the CEO of the company at different levels
  • Manage his personal diary, accordingly, receive calls, book and prepare and organize meetings, including meeting rooms for internal staff and external customers, book hotels for our customers and staff, deriving from abroad and North East of the country
  • Going to the bank on behalf of the company and performing the necessary financial transactions
  • I had access to the company credit card, mobile and a car and had the freedom to purchase and order materials such as inks for printers, filters, stationery, and other materials we were short of
  • All subjects in general related to the CEO had to pass through me first, and once filtered as instructed by him, then he could treat some directly and some were assigned to me
  • I had the password he used to login onto his company computer, and I was the only person allowed to use his computer when he was abroad or in a very important meeting
  • From time to time, I had to travel abroad, to attend meetings in Spain and Geneva (Head office)
  • We also had regular internal staff meetings in the north and south of the country (this was usually once a month)
  • My work also consisted of doing general duties such as e-mailing, faxing, covering letter, post, producing invoices and attends to all the requests as a personal assistant
  • I had to make use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and outlook.

  • Translate documents for the Sessions and Delocalized meetings (Extraordinary Sessions, Ordinary Sessions)

  • Proofread all the documents, before submitting them for printing.

  • Part of my job was mainly Interpreting (conference, consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation), and during my time at the Court, I have gained experience in different areas, such as Court sessions, work retreats, conferences, seminars, training sessions, various Statutory meetings throughout the year, meetings with different ECOWAS Institutions, agencies, and partners
  • The Court meetings also entailed opening of the Legal Year Ceremony, International Conferences, and External Court Sessions
  • I was also engaged in various meetings and provided interpretation and translation for the Honorable President of the Court, Honorable Judges, colleagues, members of Staff within the Court and other sister Institutions, such as ECOWAS Parliament, ECOWAS Commission
  • After certain meetings, it was also expected from me to write reports
  • Also, it was part of my responsibility to be knowledgeable regarding the legal terminology, the Legal Texts and Regulations of the Court and the whole of ECOWAS community, therefore I am an active participant in trainings and seminars.

  • I also helped new starters, giving them support, training, and encouragement where and when needed, this was the best aspect of my job as I truly enjoy helping others
  • I also took roles in other jobs, such as giving support to my manager when he (she) had other work-related engagements, by keeping the team updated on new developments and ensuring all relevant paperwork had been cascaded to my fellow teammates
  • The final and most important part of my job was providing great customer service, which I enjoyed a lot to deliver.
