Work History

Research Assistant

Centre for Human Virology and Genomics, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research
Lagos
07.2022 - Current
  • Organized, managed and entered over 200 patient data into the institution patient database. This led to efficient handling and processing of patients results.
  • Performed daily maintenance, calibrations, ran controls and tested over 400 serum samples using a Cobas C311 chemistry analyzer. Independently plotted 20 Levey-Jennings (LJ) charts before running samples daily to ensure the equipment is functioning properly.
  • Carried out Nucleic acid extraction and PCR on over 200 COVID-19, HIV Drug resistance, Viral Hemorrhagic fevers, and monkey pox biological samples.
  • Sorted and analyzed data collected from over 300 Human papillomavirus samples across North and South Nigeria.
  • Collaborated with the Bleeding and Separation laboratories as well as the Clinical diagnostics Department to ensure proper tracking and transfer of over 1,000 biological samples amongst the laboratories.
  • Participated in a training on the proper protocol for sample collection, rejection, analysis, and handling. This led to an enhanced and maximized performance across all the laboratories.
  • Ensured the standard operating procedure for pre analytical phase of the testing process was strictly followed by actively listening to customers, handling concerns quickly and escalating major issues leading to Increased customer satisfaction.
  • Integrated an improved system of conducting trainings on standard operating procedures in each laboratory for over 20 newly accepted industrial training students and interns. This provided them with a precise yet uncomplicated view of the workflow in the Bleeding, Sample separation, Clinical Chemistry, CD4, Serology, Molecular diagnostics, and Viral load Laboratories.
  • Participated in continuous improvement of customer service by generating suggestions, engaging in problem-solving activities to support teamwork.

Undergraduate Research Student

University of Lagos
Lagos
01.2021 - 08.2021
  • Developed a proposal on the effects of Datura metel leaf extract on male albino mice liver and kidney function. Analyzed data collected after 4 weeks of treating 28 mice with the plant extract using microsoft excel. Interpreted and discussed my findings using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Spearman correlation analysis and bar charts in a written research project. Successfully defended the project.
  • Managed the projects of 4 undergraduate project students under the guidance of the project supervisor. Reviewed literature that aided in developing 3 different experimental design specific to each students research topic.
  • Sourced for ethically bred animal models, negotiated the prices of laboratory materials needed, and collaborated with a Medical laboratory scientist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to run clinical chemistry test on 14 parameters for testing liver and kidney functions.
  • Entered a daily log of the different physiological changes in the animal models over the period of treatment with plant extract. This aided in the interpretation and discussion of the final results as a correlation was shown to exist between these changes and varying levels of parameters tested.

Student Intern

Reddington Hospital
Lagos
10.2019 - 01.2020
  • Partnered with professionals in the Phlebotomy, Clinical Chemistry, Medical Microbiology, Serology and Hematology Departments
  • Carried out different clinical diagnostic tests under the supervision of trained Medical Laboratory Scientists. Underwent weekly training on the standard operating procedures of each laboratory. Gained comprehensive knowledge of how to operate and maintain the Cobas C311 chemistry analyzer, Hematology analyzer, light microscopes fo semen analysis and to confirm positive malaria results, and materials in all the laboratories.
  • Received a rigorous training on the proper Biosafety protocols like the need for personal protective equipment and the intricacies of proper disposal of different categories of wastes generated in the laboratories. Presented an oral seminar on Biosafety protocols at the end of my training.
  • Performed administrative duties and staff support tasks. As evidenced by my role in entering patient data and results from in-house patients and samples received from other hospitals and laboratories.
  • Analyzed problems such as delayed results and missing samples, encountered when dealing with patients and worked with teams to develop solutions. Attended to patients and identified pending issues they had with the laboratories and helped solve them.
  • Collaborated with team to optimize pre- and post- evaluation workflow and achieve objectives.
  • Completed research on the impact of patient results in diagnostics and treatment, compiled data and assisted in timely reporting. Collaborated with medical practitioners by accurately reporting the results of over 200 biological samples which led to proper treatment and prescriptions.
