• Risk Assessment: Identify hazards in flange handling, assembly, and testing. Ensure risk assessments and Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) are done before work starts. Ensure proper conduct of LMRA on the equipment to be worked on.
• Safety Procedures: Develop and enforce safe work procedures for flange activities (e.g., bolt torquing, pressure testing). Ensure the use of correct PPE like gloves, eye protection, and face shields. Ensure the right procedure for the job is followed.
• Training & Awareness: These trainings and awareness ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards (e.g. ASME, OSHA), and legal regulations. Avenues like safety briefings, toolbox talks (TBT), and intervention opportunities are examples of training opportunities I often use.
• Incident Management: Investigate accidents, near misses, or unsafe acts related to flange work. Report and document findings and implement corrective measures. Escalate incidents promptly for proper control and mitigation.
• Permit to Work (PTW): Check that PTWs are in place for tasks like breaking containment, hot work, or working at height, final makeup, etc.
• Emergency Preparedness: Ensure first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and spill kits are nearby. Educate teams on emergency response in case of flange failure or gas release, fire, trapped pressure and other job-related hazards.
• Environment/job site Protection: Monitor for spills of oil, lubricants, hydraulic, or chemicals during flange operations. Ensure proper disposal of used gaskets, rags, and waste. Implementation of a dynamic house-keeping culture in the work site.
• Reporting: Keep daily safety reports, checklists, and incident logs. Participate in site safety meetings and audits. Fill out HSE checkcards and submit to the right authority for immediate action on safety-related issues observation.
• Continuous Improvement: Recommend improvements in flange management practices for better safety.

• Flange Assembly & Bolting Operations:-Perform correct alignment and assembly of flanges according to engineering specifications. - Apply proper bolt tightening techniques (torquing, tensioning, or hydraulic bolting) to ensure leak-proof connections. - Use calibrated tools (torque wrenches, hydraulic torque machines) for accurate bolt loading. - Follow flange bolting sequences and procedures to prevent gasket damage or joint failure.
• Flange Inspection & Maintenance:- Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of flanges, gaskets, and bolts for wear, corrosion, or defects. - Replace damaged gaskets, bolts, nuts, and washers as needed. - Ensure proper surface cleaning (removal of rust, debris, old gasket material) before reassembly. - Verify flange faces (RF, FF, RTJ) for smoothness and proper sealing.
• Leak Testing & Pressure Integrity: - Assist in hydrotesting, pneumatic testing, or ultrasonic leak detection of flange joints. - Identify and report leaks, ensuring corrective actions are taken promptly. - Follow pressure safety protocols during testing and maintenance.
• Documentation & Compliance: - Maintain records of flange assembly, torque values, and inspection reports. - Follow industry standards (ASME, API, ANSI) and company procedures for flange management. - Adhere to safety regulations (OSHA, PPE requirements, confined space entry if applicable).
• Safety & Housekeeping: - Follow strict safety protocols (LOTO – Lockout Tagout, hazard awareness). - Use appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, helmets, etc.) during operations. - Maintain a clean and organised work area to prevent accidents.
• Coordination & Reporting:- Work with maintenance teams, engineers, and inspectors to ensure proper flange installation. - Report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or non-conformities to supervisors.
