Babafemi George Ogunjemite

Ogunjemite Babafemi George is of the Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Akure, Nigeria. I served as the Head of the Department from August 1st, 2015, to July 31st, 2018. I also served as the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, Taraba State University, Jalingo, Nigeria, from Sept 1st 2018, Sept. 30th. 2019. I have accumulated over two and a half decades of experience in teaching and research in wildlife conservation ecology and Ecotourism, spanning from October 1998 to date, within the Nigerian University System. My Ph.D. is on the ecology of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes ellioti) in the rainforest of Southwestern Nigeria (2004). I have published widely (Eighty articles) in world-class Journals. I have worked on several taxa of wildlife species, including monkeys, antelopes, birds, and reptiles, to establish their habitat requirements and maintain them for ecological tourism, thereby aiding their conservation. Human dimension, economic valuation, forest regeneration, and delineation, which are key to wildlife survival, have been integral parts of my work. I have supervised more than thirty students at the master's and PhD levels. I am currently engaged in genetic analysis and the drive to save the non-human primate species of Nigeria from being locally extirpated. I also have my attention on the communities of primates on the eastern side of the Dahomey Gap, to understand the implications of the biogeographical barriers of the region in the delineation of their taxa. I am fully involved in promoting primate tourism in Nigeria's Forests. I am a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Species Survival Commission, Primate Specialist Group for Africa, a Fellow of the Wildlife Society of Nigeria (WISON), a member of the Forestry Association of Nigeria (FAN), and the Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS) in Nigeria. I have served as well as the Editor-in-Chief of the Ecological Society of Nigeria (EcSON). In July 2024, I was appointed as the Coordinator of the IUCN, Nigeria Mammalian Specialist Group and a member of the Steering Committee of the Nigeria Specialist Groups.
