Dear Program Director, Re: Dr Sewuese Akuse; AAMC ID 15389464 It is my pleasure to recommend Dr. Sewuese Akuse for Internal Medicine residency training at your program. I have known Sewuese on both a personal and a professional level for 20 years dating back to our first days together in medical school and I find myself in a unique position to describe her from both perspectives. I first came to know her in our first year of medical school at Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria in 2000. Beyond medical school, I have maintained a close relationship with her over the years. She has several qualities which I believe make her an excellent fit for your residency program. I will focus on some of these attributes. As a medical student, Sewuese was extremely hardworking, one of a few with a keen interest in every aspect of medicine and this remains one of her enduring qualities. I always thought that she could go into any field of medicine and excel with ease. I still have vivid memories of the ease with which she assimilated into medical school while most of us were still trying to figure things out. Some of her most compelling attributes include motivation, a strong quest for knowledge and excellence, an eagerness to learn, openness to constructive appraisal, excellent clinical skills and a strong desire to continually improve existing practice. Sewuese’s enthusiasm for knowledge acquisition and professional advancement was evident when she decided to apply for internal medicine residency in the United States, her primary objective being to expand her horizon and seek further training outside the shores of Nigeria. She successfully completed her USMLE exams while working in clinical research. I have been tracking her career in the US and I am impressed by her desire to assimilate into the healthcare system here. She has worked under the supervision of several physicians and has familiarized herself with the tenets of medical practices in the United States. Sewuese comes very highly trained. She is always willing to put in long hours and to go above and beyond to get a task done. Her interpersonal skills earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and she has always shown great leadership qualities. Her composure and ability to remain focused under pressure in emergency situations is noteworthy. When we were both house officers (interns) during our first year post medical school, Sewuese was able to put the patients under her care at ease, she had such love and compassion for little children that seemed to draw them towards her. We worked in the Pediatric unit together, and once when there was a case of a young boy with sickle cell disease she swiftly stabilized and provided comfort to the patient and his family. She went over and beyond to make sure the parents of the young boy understood what was happening and ensured the boy had a smoother recovery. She is a great team player and is always looking to advance learning for herself and for people under her supervision. Sewuese has also been actively involved in research and volunteer work with a few publications and peer reviewed journal articles under her belt. She continues to seek academic excellence and self-improvement. I am confident that she will be an excellent addition to your program. I therefore recommend her without any reservations. Please contact me if you require any further information. Sincerely, Francis Edeani, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Medical College of Wisconsin
